Airbus A350-900: A Strategic Acquisition
The Airbus A350-900 landed at Delhi Airport on December 23, 2023, arriving from Toulouse, France. This aircraft, with a three-class cabin configuration accommodating 316 seats, will be deployed initially on domestic routes from January 22 for crew familiarisation and regulatory compliance purposes. The first flight is scheduled from Bengaluru to Mumbai. Eventually, the A350-900 will be set for longer-haul flights to destinations across continents.
Enhancing Passenger Experience
Not just its advanced technology and fuel efficiency, the A350-900 is set to redefine Air India’s passenger experience. The aircraft features private Business Class suites, Premium Economy seats, and spacious Economy Class seats, all equipped with the latest-generation Panasonic eX3 in-flight entertainment system. The entry of A350-900 into service will also mark the introduction of new uniforms designed by Indian celebrity couturier, Manish Malhotra, for Air India’s cabin crew and pilots.
Broader Impact on India’s Aviation Industry
The acquisition of Airbus A350-900 is not only a significant step for Air India but also for India’s aviation industry. It signals growth and modernization efforts within the sector and is likely to intensify competition in the aviation market. The delivery of the remaining 19 aircraft will follow in a phased manner, aligning with Air India’s expansion plans. The airline is also planning to open a $420 million pilot training facility, further expanding its relationship with Airbus.
