Dubai-based airline, Emirates, has a “substantial” amount of ticket sale revenue trapped in Nigeria, with around half of the backlog overdue for repatriation. However, Nigeria’s tight dollars supplies, which have forced many citizens and business to look for foreign exchange on the black market, have resulted in the country withholding $743m in revenue earned by international carriers operating in the country, the largest amount owed by any country, according to IATA, the global airline industry association. Emirates has made many concerted efforts to restart flights in Nigeria since halting them five months ago, but a solution has yet to be found.
