President Buhari has met with Ethiopian Airlines’ board chairman, Girma Wake, to discuss the operationalization of Nigeria Air. Wake requested the resolution of legal obstacles blocking Nigeria Air, which Ethiopian Airlines has a 49% stake in, from commencing operations. He also asked for the repatriation of airline funds that are trapped in Nigeria due to foreign exchange issues. President Buhari stated that it was a “weighty decision” to re-launch a national carrier but expressed confidence that “things will be alright”. Wake also highlighted the airline’s plans to expand operations in Nigeria, with additional daily flights to Lagos from Addis Ababa, as well as Abuja-Addis Ababa. In addition, Nigeria has been chosen to host the secretariat of the Sahel Climate Fund.
