United Airlines has invested $5m in carbon capture company Svante to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from carbon dioxide. Svante captures up to 95% of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere using structured absorbent beds, and once captured, the carbon dioxide is concentrated for use in SAF or other products. The investment supports the company’s commercial-scale filter manufacturing facility in Vancouver, Canada, and follows United Airlines’ goal to be 100% emission-free by 2050, without relying on typical carbon offsets. Currently, United Airlines has invested in the future production of over three billion gallons of SAF.
