North Macedonia’s Ministry of Transport has received applications for financial incentives to carriers that will introduce new flights from Skopje and Ohrid airports. Hungary’s Wizz Air and Germany’s Lufthansa applied after a previous procedure was cancelled. A commission will evaluate the submissions in the next period. The ministry cancelled the earlier call in February because the evaluation commission concluded that applicants, including Greece’s Aegean Airlines, had not submitted the complete documentation. The new programme’s primary goal is to increase air traffic and create more connections across Europe and beyond. Passenger numbers at North Macedonia’s international airports in Skopje and Ohrid grew by 70.4% to 2.27 million in 2022.
