Airbnb hosts in Quebec may be breaking new regulations designed to ensure safety and prevent unregistered property rentals, just a week after their introduction. The online accommodation platform requires hosts to provide a six-digit policy number in Airbnb listings, linked to official registration with provincial government. But Canada’s CTV News has claimed that some users are using a ‘fake’ permit number (123456) when creating listings. Some hosts also use one registration number for multiple locations, which is illegal under Quebec law. This way around the new regulations means properties may contain inadequate safety provisions and that the city loses revenue from tourist taxes that must be paid on registered Airbnb listings.
