Agoda, an online travel agency in the Asia-Pacific region, runs almost its entire IT infrastructure on its private cloud. Operating four data centers, Agoda uses a lot of open-source software to build its services to achieve efficiency at scale while keeping TCO down. The company has built an extensive experimentation platform that runs 1,000 experiments at any given point to improve the user experience. Additionally, the company uses some SaaS services, but it avoids vendor lock-in by building its stuff to achieve efficiency at scale. The public cloud comes in when it is more cost-effective, but Agoda has proven that it is way more cost efficient than current public cloud offerings in running Kubernetes containers. The fear of losing expertise is what drives the company towards the public cloud, but Agoda wants to maintain its expertise in hardware, Kubernetes, big data, and Kafka, React, and mobile development.
