The Open For Business coalition, which includes companies such as Google, Microsoft, MasterCard, HSBC, and Facebook owner Meta, has spoken out against Uganda’s anti-LGBTQ legislation. The coalition argued that the legislation, which includes the death penalty or life imprisonment for some homosexual acts, would harm Uganda’s economy and undermine the attractiveness of Uganda as a place for businesses and investors. President Yoweri Museveni must sign the legislation for it to become law, and has faced international condemnation, including from the United States, the United Nations, and the European Union. The anti-homosexuality bill has strong support in Uganda, including among church leaders. Uganda would not be alone in criminalising homosexuality; more than 30 African countries do likewise.
