Bhutan, located in southern Asia, has begun selling gold in its duty free shops to raise money for tourism in the country. The sale of gold is being used to celebrate the occasion of the King’s birthday and the country’s new year. The gold will be sold in limited quantities in order to keep its value high and although tourists can purchase gold coins, they must also spend at least one night in a Department of Tourism approved hotel in Bhutan. As the shops will not make a profit on the sale of the gold, their goal is to promote tourism. Bhutan caters to many Indian tourists and the product provides an opportunity for them to obtain a unique item from the country.
