China Eastern Airlines has resumed direct flights to Siem Reap, a cultural province in Cambodia. The airline’s flight, carrying 132 Chinese tourists, was greeted with a warm welcome from tourism officials and local authorities in Cambodia. The Southeast Asian nation is expecting to attract 4 million international tourists by 2023, with 800,000 to 1 million of those tourists coming from China. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, China was the largest source of foreign tourists to Cambodia, providing 35.7% of total tourist arrivals in 2019 and generating $1.8 billion in revenue. The comeback of Chinese tourists has given “high hopes” for Cambodia’s tourism industry and economic growth in the post-pandemic era. Tourism is one of the four pillars supporting Cambodia’s economy, having attracted up to 6.61 million international tourists in 2019 and generating $4.92 billion in gross revenue.
