Myanmar’s tourism industry was booming in 2019, with over 4 million visitors, but the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent military coup led to a dramatic decline in 2020, with only 150,000 foreigners visiting. The military government is now attempting to lure tourists back despite ongoing fighting in the country. Al Jazeera’s Tony Cheng reports from the city of Bagan in central Myanmar. However, concerns remain about the safety of tourists, as well as the ethical implications of supporting the military regime through tourism.
