Tourism in Yangon, Myanmar has been reviving, with over 60,000 tourists entering the city in the first three months of 2023, and over 22,000 in March alone. The Directorate of Hotels and Tourism (Yangon) predicts that more tourists will visit during the upcoming Maha Thingyan festival period. The tourism ministry is promoting tourism as an important business sector that can earn foreign exchange for the state, while preserving cultural heritage and contributing to socioeconomic development. The suspension of tourism during the pandemic has had a significant impact on the sector, but domestic visitors have returned in large numbers since the resumption of tourism in 2021. The Thingyan period is expected to attract more tourists to Yangon and cultural heritage sites.
