Myanmar’s Myeik Archipelago is a lesser-known but beautiful island-hopping destination than neighboring countries in Southeast Asia. The archipelago includes 800 islands, many of which are untouched, with crystal waters and wildlife, aquatic animals and ethnic groups. Starting at Kawthaung, southern Myanmar’s largest town, a range of independent tours and private boats are available for island hopping, taking visitors around some of the islands most accessible to tourism. Recommended islands to visit include Mc Leod Island, Lampi Island, Cock’s Comb Island and Kyu Phi Lar Island. The latter, also known as Pilar, is particularly quiet, with long, white beaches and fewer visitors. Visitors can return to Kawthaung by flying back to the city, which is home to the Shwedagon Pagoda and well-maintained colonial buildings.
