The Prime Ministers of Australia and India, Anthony Albanese and Narendra Modi, met in Sydney to discuss issues including migration, trade, and regional security. They signed a migration deal aimed at boosting Indian student and business travel to Australia, and established a hydrogen task force to expand cooperation on clean energy. The leaders also discussed increasing cooperation on mining and critical minerals and working towards a comprehensive economic cooperation agreement. India is Australia’s sixth largest trading partner, and the second-largest and fastest-growing diaspora group in Australia is of Indian ancestry. The two nations are members of the Quad group, which also includes Japan and the United States, and which stands for an open, stable, secure, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
