Food inflation has reached up to 42% in urban areas of Pakistan, causing consumers to turn to slightly cheaper but “high quality” Iranian goods, such as oil and cheese, which are readily available in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. While there are a number of products available in the market, the most sought-after Iranian products are cooking oil and butter, which are mostly available to commercial consumers who acquire them directly from wholesale dealers. The arrival of Iranian goods has been received wholeheartedly by consumers, who express confidence in these food items. Many of the Iranian goods are smuggled, brought to the country through the porous border between Iran and Balochistan and through Afghanistan. According to experts, border trade, especially at the Balochistan-Iran border, “is not categorized as smuggling” by either side. Iranian food items are exported to many Gulf and European countries, including UAE and Qatar.
