The tourism industry in Thailand is seeking ways to boost its economy after an unexpected slump in the last quarter. However, the country’s air pollution levels are a major concern for tourists, with PM2.5 levels almost 14 times the recommended levels by the World Health Organization. Farmers burning sugarcane fields and automobile emissions are the major contributing factors to the pollution problem in Thailand. As international tourists may choose to visit a country with cleaner air, Thailand’s economy is at risk. The government’s initiatives to promote medical tourism and long-term stays by wealthy visitors are yet to be seen if they will work.
