The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has launched a rail travel tourism program under the theme “retrace history”. The program, serviced by Japanese KIHA 183 passenger trains, aims to educate tourists about Thailand’s history and culture. The program will launch in April 2023 with trips to Sarabui, Chachoengsao, Ayutthaya and Ratchaburi provinces. The SRT plans to run similar programs every month under different themes, such as “adventure above the water” and “Save the World.” The SRT received 17 diesel KIHA 183 locomotives from the Hokkaido Railway Company in December 2022. They have undergone modification by the SRT to fit Thailand’s railway tracks. The air-conditioned trains can travel up to 100-110 kilometres per hour and will be in use for another 15 to 20 years. The program is priced at THB 1,499 per person for the April 2023 trips and is available for purchase at all SRT train stations including online.
