Dragon’s Eye Island in Ha Long Bay has been found to have offered illegal tourist services for over five years. Despite authorities being aware of these activities, no serious measures have been taken to put an end to them. A delegation led by Nguyen Xuan Ky, party chief of Quang Ninh Province, inspected the island to find many tourism services provided on the islet without permits, with some even building accommodation facilities. Though tours to visit the island are advertised online, many of them are not legally registered. Ky has ordered Ha Long Town to review all tourism projects and activities on the islet and “strictly handle all violating individuals and units.” Ha Long Town drew 7.1 million visitors last year, including 356,400 foreigners.
