CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As of 5 p.m. Saturday, nearly 3,000 flights within the U.S. have already been canceled for Sunday in anticipation of snow and ice in the South, according to the flight tracking site flightaware.com, which tracks flight cancellations worldwide.
A major winter storm is expected to move across the Charlotte area overnight Saturday and into Sunday, bringing snow, sleet and freezing rain.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport – a major airport hub for American Airlines – canceled 90 flights Saturday.
The airport leads the list of cancellations for Sunday at U.S. airports, with more than 1,000 flights canceled. 500 of those flights are with American Airlines, which is more than 80% of their flights for the day.
Other impacted airports include Raleigh-Durham, Reagan National and Chicago O’Hare.
All major U.S. airlines have issued weather waivers.
