Lawyers Shanita Nicholas and Amanda-Jane Thomas opened Sip & Sonder, a coffee house in predominantly black Inglewood, at the end of 2018. They wanted to create a community-minded venture complete with a roastery, creative space and live events where black people could feel welcome and enjoy all the perks of cafe culture. Sip & Sonder is now spread across three locations and includes the nonprofit Sonder Impact formerly known as the LA Black Investors Club, which focuses on professional capacity building within black and brown communities. Nicholas and Thomas travel to countries such as Honduras, Jamaica and Ethiopia to source coffee and meet producers to ensure sustainability, traceability and directness so the coffee consumers know where it comes from and those who produce it know where it is going. They see a growing number of black and brown-owned coffee shops in LA supporting ownership throughout the supply chain.
