Transportation startup Via has acquired the popular urban mapping app Citymapper for an undisclosed sum, in a deal that will see Citymapper’s data integrated into the Via platform. The app, which covers 108 cities globally and has around 50 million users, has struggled to capitalise on its early promise, despite being valued at $365m in a $40m Series B round in 2016. Citymapper has faced challenges sustaining its momentum and early promise, despite attracting big-name investors such as Balderton, Index Ventures and Benchmark. The acquisition comes after Via raised $110m last month, with CEO Daniel Ramot saying the funds would be spent on acquisitions to grow its transportation technology stack.
