NEW DELHI: Italy has recognized Serum Institute of India’s covid-19 vaccine Covishield, paving the way for fully-vaccinated Indian nationals to travel to the European nation.
Announcing the Italian government’s decision, the Indian embassy in Rome said in a Twitter post on Friday that the development followed the G-20 health ministers’ meeting between India’s health minister Mansukh Mandaviya and his Italian counterpart Roberto Speranza.
The embassy also recognized persistent efforts of India’s foreign ministry and Italy’s health ministry.
While there has been a major debate in India over the UK’s recognition of Covishield, a version of the vaccine developed jointly by Oxford University and UK-based AstraZeneca, Italy is the latest country to recognize the vaccine.
