About 112 000 visitors flocked to Durban from December 14 to 17. eThekwini Municipality mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda, yesterday gave an update on what the festive season has been like.
He said visitors continue to flock to the city despite the rainy weather.
“72 866 were overnight visitors and 39 235 were day visitors. The direct spend was R211million, with over 1 000 direct employment opportunities created,” he said.

Kaunda said the business boom over the Reconciliation Day long weekend is testament
that Durban has unlimited tourism offerings and remains Africa’s entertainment playground.
“Recently, Durban has been certified as Africa’s 39th leading festival and events destination for the third year in row by the World Travel Awards,” he said.
Kaunda said the city has lined up a number of events that are expected to further boost the local tourism sector.
