Doha, Qatar: In a recent announcement, the Doha Film Institute (DFI) introduced an educational initiative tailored for young film aficionados residing in Qatar— the Ajyal Film Club.
The club, according on the institute’s website, provides an exclusive opportunity for members to access international films, partake in enriching activities, workshops, and masterclasses spanning six months. Interested individuals can now register at dohafilminstitute.com.
Catering to different age groups, the programme is segmented into three sections: Mohaq (8 to 12 years old), Hilal (13 to 17 years old), and Bader (18 to 25 years old). Members of the Ajyal Film Club can anticipate exclusive benefits designed to elevate their cinematic journey. “These benefits will be revealed upon becoming a member!,” DFI said.
All sessions will be hosted at the Museum of Islamic Art Auditorium.
This inclusive club warmly welcomes both locals and residents aged 8 to 25, allocating participants to a section corresponding to their age during the inaugural programme session. The programme will run from January to June this year, featuring monthly gatherings for each member section.
Session timings are staggered for each group: Mohaq (Thursdays, 4pm to 7pm), Hilal (Fridays, 3pm to 7pm), and Bader (Saturdays, 3pm to 7pm).
Over the course of six months, each section will enjoy six three-hour sessions, where members can view globally acclaimed feature-length films and short selections, interact with internationally renowned guests, and partake in creative activities centered around diverse film themes for Mohaq members. Hilal and Bader sections, meanwhile, will engage in masterclasses covering filmmaking techniques and film language.
Meanwhile, DFI has also announced that its monthly lecture series “Watching the Classics – ‘Making Movies Modern’ will be on January 15. Presented by renowned scholar Richard Peña, Professor of Film Studies at Columbia University and Director Emeritus of the New York Film Festival.
This series of lectures/discussions each focuses on an undisputed world cinema classic.
For this month, the movie featured is entitled “Mirror” by Andrei Tarkovsky. This is the final session for the nine-part series. Lecture fee is at QR50 and interested individuals may register via the institute’s website.
