American Airlines said it is an anchor partner to the Breakthrough Energy Catalyst program, investing $100 million in a collaborative effort to accelerate clean energy technologies for achieving a net zero economy by 2050.
Founded by Bill Gates in 2015, Breakthrough Energy works toward scaling technologies to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 through investment vehicles, philanthropic programs, policy advocacy, and other activities. Breakthrough Energy Catalyst brings together companies, governments and private philanthropy to accelerate the adoption of clean technologies.
Catalyst will start by funding projects across four technologies: sustainable aviation fuel, green hydrogen, direct air capture and long-duration energy storage.
“By working in partnership with Catalyst, we’re helping accelerate and scale our industry’s nascent solutions, like sustainable aviation fuel, along with other technologies that will be necessary to reduce emissions from aviation and across the economy,” American Chairman and Chief Executive Doug Parker said.
