Flying is an immense privilege, but one which comes with an array of potentially unfamiliar sights and sounds. For children with autism, nervous flyers, or even people simply unfamiliar with the routines that frequent flyers take for granted, this sensory smorgasbord has the potential to be a challenge. American Airlines has devised a special scheme to help ease worries relating to such concerns.
A long-running program
Known as ‘It’s Cool to Fly American,’ the scheme came about eight years ago, back in 2014. It has seen the Fort Worth-based US legacy carrier and oneworld founding member work with airport staff and local organizations across the US “to make the process [of flying] less of a mystery.” American also wants to increase “inclusion, awareness, and understanding of those on the autism spectrum.”
