American Airlines announced plans to expand its operations at London’s Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5, the home of joint-venture partner British Airways, in the coming months.
The world’s largest carrier will operate up to 11 transatlantic flights that leave from T5.
Starting March 27 and ending October 30, American flights linking London and Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles, and New York will utilize Terminal 5 for both arrivals and departures. The move does not impact American’s flights linking London with Boston, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Raleigh-Durham.
In August 2021, American began to all flights to and from New York City out of Terminal 8. It also had temporarily moved all of its operations at Heathrow to T8 in July 2020 when airport authorities temporarily closed T3, the carrier’s long-time home, due to the coronavirus pandemic-induced decline in travel.
American and BA operate a total of 14 daily flights leaving from T5 at Heathrow to New York City.
The move to Terminal 5 will allow passengers transferring to onward destinations via British Airways, American’s joint-venture partner, to connect more easily.
“We are delighted to welcome American Airlines customers and colleagues to our main home – Terminal 5 at London Heathrow,” said British Airways alliance head, Neil Chernoff.s
In December, British Airways will relocate its operations at John F. Kennedy International Airport from Terminal 7 to Terminal 8, which is operated by American. Iberia Lineas Aéreas de España, which is owned by BA’s parent company, International Airlines Group, will also relocate to T8.
Currently, in addition to American, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, and Qatar Airways use Terminal 8.
