India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has been granted permission by India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to remove Technical Paper Manuals from each aircraft cockpit of its Airbus fleet. This is part of the airline’s Less Paper Cockpit (LPC) programme, which aims to reduce the weight of the aircraft, resulting in less fuel consumption and greater efficiency. In 2015, IndiGo became the first airline in the region to replace aircraft manuals and paper charts with iPads, in its Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) initiative, leading to a reduction of 25 kg in paper weight on its Airbus fleet. The latest move follows trials and safety risk assessments by IndiGo, and utilises the robustness of the airline’s processes and iOS ecosystem, the airline said in a statement.
