Following the Tata group’s acquisition of Air India, the airline has announced a merger of AirAsia India with Air India Express, and a merger of Vistara with Air India, which will lead to Singapore Airlines having a 25.1% stake in Air India. Air India has also ordered 470 aircraft, putting pressure on airlines such as IndiGo, which has dominated the market since the fall of Jet Airways. Individually, neither Air India nor Vistara matches the frequency of IndiGo on the top 10 routes, but the picture changes when the frequencies of both airlines are combined, particularly on the top three routes. SpiceJet and Go FIRST have faced issues with capacity utilization, while IndiGo waits for the opening of new airports to increase capacity.
