The national carrier said in a statement issued on Friday, May 31, 2024, that the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), in conjunction with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), conducted a safety inspection and flights were running on schedule after the runway was declared safe.
We would like to inform our customers that our flights in and out of Kisumu International Airport are running on schedule.
“The airport authority, KAA, together with KCAA, conducted a safety inspection and declared the runway safe for use,” KQ said in a statement.
KQ said its engineers are currently working with airport authorities to recover the aircraft from the airport.
The airline also apologised to customers who were affected by the incident when the plane was hit by a bird while trying to land.
KAA confirmed in a statement this morning that all passengers on board the Kenya Airways aircraft that suffered the incident on Thursday, May 30, 2024, had been safely evacuated.
After landing at Kisumu International Airport, the KQ aircraft was hit by a bird, leaving the aircraft stranded on the runway, the authority said.
Following the incident, the KAA assured the country and other stakeholders that the passengers were evacuated unharmed after a quick response from its team at the airport.
The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has confirmed that a Kenya Airways (KQ) aircraft experienced an incident after landing at Kisumu International Airport this evening, resulting in the aircraft coming to rest on the turning loop at the end of the runway.
The KAA had indicated that it had cleared the runway blocked by the aircraft, paving the way for other aircraft to land at Kisumu International Airport.
The safe operating distance on the runway has now been declared, and a Notice to All Airmen (NOTAM) will be published by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) to facilitate the resumption of normal operations at the airport.
At KAA, the safety of all passengers and airport users is our top priority. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused by this incident and express our gratitude to all those affected for their patience and understanding.
