CLINTON — The Clinton Central School District, in partnership with the Flight 93 September 11th Memorial Committee, has announced the First Annual Flight 93 Edward Felt Community Run/Walk Challenge to take place from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, April 9, at the Clinton High School Stadium Track and Field. A brief remembrance ceremony will follow the event at the site of the Edward Porter Felt Flight 93 September 11th Memorial adjacent to the Clinton Foundation Memorial Brick Garden along Chenango Avenue.
The purpose of the Run/Walk Challenge is to raise funds that will go toward the annual scholarship given in honor of Edward Felt to a member of the graduating class. The goal is to make the scholarship, first given last year, self-sustaining so money for it is available each year.
Both the walk and the scholarship are ways to help the community honor and remember 1977 Clinton High School Graduate Edward Felt, who lost his life aboard United Airlines Flight 93, according to event organizers.
There are a number of ways for members of the community to participate in the event and support the annual scholarship, organizers add. The suggested donation amount for participation is $20 per person or $50 maximum per family. The first 100 people to register and pay will receive a free T-shirt provided by Access Federal Credit Union. To donate or to register, go online to the www.ccs.edu/September11th website.
At the event, the outer lanes on the track will be used for those who are challenging themselves to get moving and/or move with their family or friends; the inside lanes are for those interested in competitively racing others on their own, or at the designated times that will be announced for either organizational groups or age groups; and just after noon, there will be a brief remembrance ceremony at the Flight 93 Memorial at the Brick Garden in front of the school (walking distance from the track).
