Vietjet CEO Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao has been appointed as chairwoman of the low-cost carrier. The new appointment comes as the company faces legal issues regarding four leased aircraft, prompting the Aviation Working Group to downgrade Vietnam in its Cape Town Compliance Index. The watchdog raised concerns about the country’s compliance with the Cape Town Convention, which is intended to protect the rights of lessors. In October 2022, a lessor terminated the leases of four aircraft operated by a Vietnamese airline owing to unpaid fees, which led to the de-registration of the planes by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam. However, a court ruling in February effectively allowed the lessee to resume managing and operating the aircraft.
