Vistara cancels flights on Thu; efforts continue to address pilots’ issues
Vistara continued to cancel flights on Thursday as the Tata Group works to address pilot issues, while fares spiked in some routes due to cancellations, according to sources and travel industry executives. A day after Vistara CEO Vinod Kannan apologised to pilots about the issues and assured them of taking steps to resolve them, the airline saw cancellations of around 20 flights. The number of flight cancellations was in the double digits on Thursday but less than 26 cancellations were seen on Wednesday and the situation is improving, the sources said. Vistara, which is to operate more than 300 flights daily in the ongoing summer schedule, has decided to temporarily scale back operations. Meanwhile, two pilots’ groupings on Thursday said the problems raised by Vistara pilots are not isolated but rather indicative of systemic issues across Tata Group aviation entities.

Myanmar’s anti-junta group says drone incident shows military have no safe place
A drone attack by militias in Myanmar’s capital was a success and sought to undermine the ruling military and show that its generals have nowhere to hide, an official from the anti-junta parallel National Unity Government (NUG) said on Thursday. “This is a time when the junta is forcing conscription and causing fear for the people. This attack on their nerve centre, Naypyitaw, we want to highlight that they don’t have a safe place,” NUG spokesperson Kyaw Zaw said, without specifying whether targets had been hit. Military-run TV earlier reported 13 drones were shot down over Naypyitaw, with no casualties or damage to property.
All of you have travelled to the Gulf, please see today how much respect we are getting in the Gulf. How it was 10 years? and how it is today? To do that you have to continuously go there, build relations, look at the community problems…and that is something he (V Muraleedharan) has been doing. Secondly, during the COVID-19 time, from many countries in the Gulf, they sent back a very large number of people; actually, for India, we were treated very nicely and very less people had to come back. They gave vaccines to our people…They went so much out of the way that PM Modi thanked many of these Gulf countries for what they did on Independence Day. They did all of this because all the time somebody was going on behalf of PM Modi to the Gulf…The person who served as a bridge at that time to the Gulf was again V Muraleedharan.

Mathura mosque matter beyond remit of Waqf tribunal, argues Hindu side
The Hindu side on Thursday countered in the Allahabad High Court the Shahi Idgah committee’s argument that the maintainability of the suit seeking “removal” of the mosque must be heard by a Waqf tribunal, saying that matter is beyond the ambit of the tribunal. Ajay Kumar Singh appearing on behalf of the Hindu side submitted that the present dispute is beyond the ambit of the Waqf tribunal and only the civil court has jurisdiction to decide the present dispute. The counsel for the Muslim side, Taslima Aziz Ahmadi, during the last hearing on April 1, had claimed, “In this way a question/dispute has been raised on Waqf property and thus provisions of the Waqf Act will apply, and in such it is the Waqf tribunal that has the jurisdiction to hear the matter and not a civil court.” On Thursday, Ahmadi appeared in the court through video conferencing and sought time to summarise her arguments in the court. The court fixed April 18 for further hearing in the matter as the court’s time was over. Singh also mentioned a judgement of the Supreme Court of 1999, according to which religious disputes have to be decided by civil court, he argued.

Alaska Air says Boeing paid $160 mln in compensation after MAX 9 grounding
Alaska Air Group said on Thursday that Boeing had paid about $160 million to the airline in the first quarter as initial compensation to address the hit from the temporary grounding of 737 MAX 9 jets. The payment is equivalent to lost profits in the quarter, the carrier said in a filing, adding it expects additional compensation. An Alaska Airlines-operated MAX 9 jet experienced a mid-air cabin panel blowout in January, which led the U.S. aviation regulator to order a temporary grounding of 171 jets for inspections. “Although we did experience some book away following the accident and 737-9 MAX grounding, February and March both finished above our original pre-grounding expectations,” Alaska said. The airline will now exclude the compensation from its calculation for first-quarter adjusted loss per share, which is expected to be $1.05 to $1.15. It had earlier planned to include the payment in its results.

PM sleeping after taking opium as China entered Indian territory: Mallikarjun Kharge
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday launched a blistering attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a “sardar of liars” and accusing him of “sleeping” after taking opium while China “entered” Indian territory. Addressing an election rally in Rajasthan’s Chittorgarh, he said Modi does not think for the country but is busy only abusing the Gandhi family whose members sacrificed their lives for the nation. “Modi says ‘I have a 56-inch chest, I will not be scared’. If you are not afraid then why have you left a large part of our land for China. They are coming inside and you are sleeping. Have you taken sleeping pills? Have they taken opium from the fields of Rajasthan… and fed you?” he said in Hindi. “Modi kehate hain 56 inch ki chhati hai, main nahi darunga. Agar nahi darte to fir China ko hamare bahut saa bhag kyo chhode? Wo andar ghus kar aa rahe, aap kya neend kar rahe ho? Kya neend ki goli khaaye ho? Kya Rajasthan ke kheton me se afeem le jaake’… ya wo khilaye hai kya?” Kharge alleged the prime minister is not concerned about the country but he is busy abusing the Gandhi family. “He wants to take the people of the country with him by torturing them. He always keeps lying,” Kharge said. “Modi is ‘sardar of liars’.”
