Wizz Air, the fastest growing and most environmentally sustainable airline in Europe, has invested £5m in biofuel company Firefly, marking its first equity investment in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) research and development. By partnering with Firefly, Wizz Air can supply SAF to its UK operations from 2028, saving up to 1.5m metric tons of CO2-eq. Firefly has developed a process that converts low-value sewage sludge waste into SAF, which is expected to deliver a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil jet fuel. The investment aligns with Wizz Air’s sustainability strategy to reduce its carbon emissions per passenger/km by 25% by 2030.
