Low-cost carriers Norwegian Air and Wizz Air have partnered with Norsk e-Fuel and Firefly, respectively, to invest in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) manufacturing. Norsk will construct a SAF factory in Mosjoen, Norway, while Firefly plans a Bristol-based plant with a target production date of 2028. SAF is viewed as essential to the aviation industry’s bid to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Other technologies, such as electric propulsion, hydrogen-electric and power-to-liquid solutions, are currently immature, and inadequate raw material supplies make collaboration key to success, carriers say.
