ECONOMYNEXT – Low-cost Emirati airline Wizz Air Abu Dabhi launched a new route from Abu Dabhi to Mattala, Sri Lanka yesterday (08). This is the first South Asian destination for the airline.
Flights will operate three times a week, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and four new Airbus A321neo aircraft and 2,869 seat capacity per month will be added to the new route, a statement said.
Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is a joint venture by ADQ, one of the region’s largest holding companies, and Wizz Air Holdings Plc, a European airline operating a fleet of 149 Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft.
According to a statement put out by Wizz Air, the new route aims to promote Sri Lanka to an entirely new segment of tourists from UAE and neighbouring regions.
In January 2022, tourists from the Middle East accounted for 2.5 percent of total tourist arrivals that month. State run SriLankan Airlines recently announced that fully vaccinated inbound travellers will no longer have to obtain a PCR test in order to travel, in an attempt to boost tourism in the country.
