British Airways will become the first airline in the world to use sustainable aviation fuel produced on a commercial scale for flights next year.
The airline will fly planes using lower-carbon fuel produced at a refinery in north Lincolnshire as part of its drive to be net zero by 2050. Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is a lower carbon-intensity fuel that can be produced from renewable feedstocks such as waste vegetable oils, fats and greases.
Under the deal with the energy company Phillips 66, British Airways will initially buy enough SAF to fly the equivalent of 700 net zero CO2 flights between London and New York on a Boeing 787 aircraft.
The Humber Refinery near Immingham is the first in the UK to produce SAF
