When it comes to following popular leadership advice, Airbnb CEO and cofounder Brian Chesky said that he has ignored the ones he has found to be unwise, one of them being not to have any favourite employees.
He acknowledges that there is a negative connotation to the idea of celebrating certain employees. “At most companies, there’d be a protest if the CEO picked [favorites].” “It would be considered unfair and not systematic,” Chesky said in a recent interview with Fortune.
However, Chesky said that if done correctly, employee favouritism enables leaders to highlight top performers, use their expertise and experience to inform strategy formulation and serve as an example for other employees.
