In recent months, several individuals in Malta have fallen victim to a sophisticated scam involving fraudulent emails purportedly from the popular holiday accommodation platform Booking.com, raising concerns about the security of users’ information on the popular hotel booking platform.
Reports indicate that the fraudulent messages stem from a hack of Booking.com’s email system, affecting users who have made accommodation bookings on the platform.
Victims receive seemingly genuine emails from the standard Booking.com address (noreply@booking.com), claiming that their payment has not been processed. The messages threaten the cancellation of their stay unless bank card details are provided through an embedded link. The phishing attempts have also been observed in the company’s mobile app notifications.
