Marnie Wilking, the chief information security officer at Booking.com, has warned of a dramatic increase in travel scams, which she attributes to the use of artificial intelligence (AI). According to her, there’s been a 500% to 900% surge in such scams in the past year and a half. She claimed that AI, particularly generative tools like ChatGPT, has been implicated in a noticeable rise in phishing scams, where people are tricked into revealing their financial information. The AI enables fraudsters to create highly deceptive emails and internet booking links, making it easier for them to extract sensitive information from unsuspecting internet users. Consequently, Wilking has cautioned internet users to be vigilant in the face of such phishing attacks.
