Online bus ticketing platform redBus has conducted screenings for 4000 bus drivers in India to check for vision and other health problems associated with the onset of diabetes. The screenings were part of a CSR initiative conducted in collaboration with MakeMyTrip Foundation and VisionSpring Foundation to promote road safety and ensure the well-being of bus drivers and staff.
The screenings took place at 70 different camps held in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Pune, with qualified professionals from VisionSpring ensuring high safety standards and hygiene. Free eyeglasses were provided to those diagnosed with vision impairment, and cases requiring hospital intervention were redirected to hospitals for treatment at subsidized rates.
Manoj Agarwala, the Chief Business Officer of redBus, emphasized the importance of driver health, stating that the long hours spent driving necessitated early identification of potential health issues to prevent long-term damage. He expressed gratitude to VisionSpring for partnering on the initiative and helping to ensure the well-being of their partner bus operators’ workforce.
Diabetes and vision care are often overlooked due to the busy schedules and frequent travels of bus drivers. The screenings provided an opportunity for 4000 drivers and staff members to get tested, and 2277 free eyeglasses were provided, with 96% being first-time wearers. The response to the tests was overwhelming, with participants visiting in large numbers.
Anshu Taneja, the Managing Director of VisionSpring India, expressed delight in partnering with redBus and MakeMyTrip Foundation and providing drivers with access to free screenings. He emphasized VisionSpring’s goal of creating a world where everyone can see clearly and the hope that this initiative will raise awareness about the importance of regular health screenings.
