Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced plans to increase its investment in South Africa’s cloud infrastructure with an additional R30.4 billion ($2.3 billion). This takes its total investment in the country to R46 billion ($3.5 billion) between 2018 and 2029. The move is forecast to contribute at least R80 billion ($6.1 billion) to South Africa’s gross domestic product. Along with Google, Microsoft and Huawei, AWS is looking to tap into South Africa’s developing tech ecosystem. The investment comes as multinational companies show increased interest in Africa’s ICT sector, particularly as a result of widespread digitisation brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.
