As travel restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic ease around the world, commercial air traffic is expected to return to pre-pandemic levels on many routes by 2023, according to the UN aviation agency. However, this outcome comes with a predicted rise in air fares due to high fuel prices, paired with increasing demand that exceeds supply. Tour operator TUI Group has warned that spontaneous bargains and last-minute deals will be an exception, with prices expected to be higher shortly before departure. Bargain flights costing less than €50 are also likely to be a thing of the past as fuel prices remain above their long-term average. In March, data from the travel industry revealed that the amount spent on vacation and airline travel had soared 19% and 34% respectively from the previous year.
