The Zimbabwean Consulate has begun issuing e-passports as part of a pilot project which began on 21 June. Approximately 60 e-passports have been processed each day since initiation, and the project is set to be extended indefinitely. It’s offering a lifeline for Zimbabwean nationals residing in South Africa, like Gqeberha-based Garikai, who until now experienced difficulties securing documentation for his two children and six-year-old, South Africa-born, undocumented child. This progressive reprieve means Garikai, like many other Zimbabweans, will be applying for the Consulate’s e-passport in Johannesburg next month.
