Despite accounting for 2.2% of Bangladesh’s GDP in 2021, experts say that the country’s tourism industry has not been able to reach its potential due to a lack of necessary facilities and entertainment options. This has resulted in a growing number of Bangladeshi tourists travelling abroad and spending their money elsewhere. The country’s tourism stakeholders have called for government policy support to help revive the industry. Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have taken steps to attract tourists and revive their tourism industries. The CEO of Bangladesh Tourism Board said a master plan for the development of eight regions and 53 clusters is in its final stages. The state minister for tourism said that the government is constructing an exclusive tourism park at Sabrang and an eco-tourism park in Sonadia, equipped with all necessary facilities. In 2020, tourism contributed 3.02% worth Tk 76,690 crore to Bangladesh’s GDP.
