Bangladesh’s first tourism master plan has yet to be formulated, missing its December 2022 deadline. The draft is currently ready, and it will be finalized when stakeholders approve it, according to civil aviation and tourism ministry sources. Despite the government’s efforts to develop the country’s tourism sector, the industry is still operating in a bureaucratic and chaotic manner. While visa complications and inter-ministerial coordination must be addressed in the master plan, expanding visa-on-arrival for tourists could also help. State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Md Mahbub Ali reassures stakeholders that the master plan will be implemented soon and may contribute 10% to the GDP. The government is also working to simplify the visa application process. The Bangladesh Tourism Board signed a 30-year master plan agreement with international consulting firm IPE Global to develop the country’s tourism sector in January 2020, which was postponed until December 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
