Cambodia recently hosted the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, marking the country’s first time in 64 years. The event, which lasted from November 30 to December 11, featured 30 sports and 56 disciplines with around 5,500 athletes and officials from 11 participating nations. The games opened with a grand opening ceremony featuring a torch relay, cultural performances, and fireworks. Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen officially declared the games open. The country invested heavily in infrastructure for the games, with a new stadium and other facilities built specifically for the event. In addition to the sports events, there were also cultural and educational activities, including exhibitions, markets, and workshops. The Philippines, which hosted the previous games in 2017, dominated the medal table with a total of 387 medals – 149 gold, 117 silver and 121 bronze, followed by Vietnam and Thailand. Cambodia won six medals, including one gold medal in pencak silat – a martial art originating from Southeast Asia. The SEA Games are held every two years and are a multi-sport event featuring athletes from Southeast Asian countries, including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam.
