The government of Laos is aiming to have 90 operational hydropower plants by 2020, increasing the combined installed generation capacity to over 12,500 MW and providing permanent electricity access to 95% of families in the country. Currently, there are 42 operating hydropower plants in Laos, producing a combined 6,391 MW of energy annually. The government plans to export 200 MW of electricity to Myanmar by 2020, and also aims to increase electrification across the country to 95% of families as a means of reducing poverty. Laos exports electricity primarily to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, and plans to add Singapore to its list of customers by exporting 100 MW of power via power grids in Thailand and Malaysia. With its abundance of hydropower resources from the Mekong River and its tributaries, Laos has the potential to produce over 25,000 MW of hydropower.
