On March 13, 2023, Cambodia’s Minister of Tourism Thong Khon led a delegation to meet with Lao Deputy Prime Minister Kikeo Khai Khamphitoun in Vientiane. Khai Khamphitoun thanked Cambodia for its assistance in the form of vaccines, medical equipment, and funds in the fight against COVID-19. The two ministers discussed ways to boost tourism flow between the two countries and from third countries. They agreed to examine new infrastructure potential in both countries as catalysts for attracting tourists. They also urged tourism officials to consider facilitating cross-border travel, self-driving tourism, and boosting the flow of Chinese and third-country tourists to both countries through the potential of the Lao high-speed rail. The Cambodian side offered to facilitate the provision of special policies for flights and special policies at the request of their Lao counterparts. The two ministers also agreed to organize various events such as the Cambodia-Laos Cycling Marathon, food fair, and seize the opportunity to host the 32nd SEA Games and the ASEAN Para Games in 2023, visit Cambodia 2023, and the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2024 in Laos to attract tourists. The private sectors of the two countries also met to discuss arrangements for joint tourism packages to link tourism businesses.
