The Laotian government has warned locals not to enter land that has been designated for a Chinese tourist development or face arrest and prosecution. The villagers of Huai Siet, who have traditionally fished the river, protested against the warning and asked for government aid in finding alternative food sources. The land is set to be developed by Chinese firm ACTS Company, which has a 70-year concession to build a 96-acre golf course, trade centre, tourism, cultural and hotel facilities, as well as a research centre into fish and crab raising. Laos has benefited from such deals but they frequently prompt tensions between residents and developers.
